Union Pacific's 844 steam engine arrives in Memphis Saturday morning (Oct. 22) to mark the opening of the Big River Crossing. The Crossing is a new pedestrian and bike lane over the Mississippi River, built on the side of Union Pacific's Harahan railroad bridge. The 844 chugged over the bridge from Arkansas and later went on display south of Downtown. There are only a few big steam engines left in the country; this one is powered by steam. The wheel of the drivers are 80 inches in diameter. Railfans, cycle enthusiasts, hikers and the like gathered as the bridge was officially opened.
