When aspiring actor Danny Thomas was down on his luck, he turned to his faith in St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes. He promised to build him a shrine in return for answered prayers.
That shrine is what we know today as St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude is often the last stop for hopeless families who have been told nothing more can be done. The hospital treats children from all over the world for free.
While Danny is now gone, a bronze bust sits in the halls of the hospital. His nose is extra shiny where people continue to run his nose as they pass through.
