Segregated Drinking Fountain

Black and White Drinking Fountain

Karen Focht January 16, 2017

This is one of the few physical reminders of segregation left in Memphis, Tennessee. Before I moved to Memphis I could not imagine a world where segregation existed. I learned about it in school, but is sounded so unbelievable. Then I moved to the south and talked to people who lived it first hand, I saw reminders. Many of those people had relatives who left Memphis and moved north for a better life. Many of those people ended up on the south side of Chicago. Eventually I came to realize Chicago was not so different. "Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal."
